A development application has been lodged with Tablelands Regional Council for a 100-unit wellness resort at the gateway entrance to Yungaburra, one of the prettiest villages on the Atherton Tablelands.
The application, from restaurant owner Nick Crameri, covers the former Nick’s Restaurant, Bar and Pizzeria site plus two other lots.
What is proposed
Fifty hotel suites and fifty hotel apartments, made up of forty one-bedroom and ten two-bedroom units, all with balconies. Alongside them, a purpose-designed wellness centre, swimming pools, a restaurant, a cafe and a bar, landscaped gardens and water features, in a low-rise built form.
Parking is proposed at 110 spaces, with 80 on site and 30 tied to a proposed upgrade of Beech Street.
Read the economics carefully
The application projects around 91 full-time equivalent jobs during construction and about 154 once operating, with roughly AUD $52.1 million in annual economic output and $25.4 million a year added to Gross Regional Product.
Those are the applicant’s own figures from the development application, not independently verified numbers. Development applications routinely carry optimistic economic modelling, and it has not been tested by council or anyone else. Treat it as a proposal, not a forecast.
What happens next
Public submissions will open before council makes any decision. Nothing is approved, nothing is funded and nothing is built.
We are logging it because Yungaburra has very little accommodation of this scale, and if it went ahead it would change the character of the village considerably. That cuts both ways, and the submission period is where locals and regular visitors get a say.
For now, Yungaburra remains what it has always been: a heritage village with good food, the Curtain Fig a few minutes away, and platypus in Peterson Creek at dusk.
