Stratford Sounds: A Free Day of Live Music Across a Cairns Suburb

More than 30 artists across seven venues in one walkable Cairns suburb, and it will not cost you anything. Stratford Sounds is on Saturday 12 September 2026.

Here is one that will not appear in any glossy visitor guide, which is precisely why we like it. On Saturday 12 September 2026, the Cairns suburb of Stratford turns itself into a walkable live music festival for the day, and it is free.

Stratford Sounds is back for its second outing. Cairns Local News reports that more than 30 artists will play across seven venues through the day, with the event delivered by WHYNOT Presents and auspiced by Stratford Bowling Club.

What makes it worth the trip

The format is the appeal. Rather than one stage in a paddock, the whole village becomes the venue: you walk between cafes, clubs and whatever else has said yes, catching sets as you go, stopping for food, and generally treating a suburban shopping strip as a festival site. The inaugural event in July 2025 ran from 9.30am until late across nine venues, one of which was a barber shop.

Division 6 Councillor Kristy Vallely, quoted by Cairns Local News, said organisers are expecting more than 2,000 people, and that “Stratford Village really came alive. People walking between venues, stopping for something to eat, listening to local musicians, having a drink and spending money with local businesses.”

This year is also the year it stops being a council event. Cairns Regional Council formally handed the running of it to the community at its last meeting and backed it with an AUD $12,000 community partnerships grant to Stratford Bowling Club. There will be a community raffle on the day, with proceeds going back into keeping the event free.

Getting there

Stratford sits about 10 minutes north of the Cairns CBD on the way to the northern beaches, just past the Botanic Gardens end of town. It is an easy drive or a short bus trip, and since the entire point is wandering between venues with a drink in hand, working out how you are getting home before you go is the sensible move.

The venue list and set times were not published in the article, so check the Stratford Sounds Facebook page for the running order before you head out.

While you are up that way

Stratford is a five minute drive from the Edge Hill and Stratford strip, which is where a lot of the better Cairns cafes actually live, and from the Cairns Botanic Gardens and Tanks Arts Centre. If you are making a day of the northern end of the city, that is your cluster.
