Ravenshoe: The Top of Queensland (Literally)

Ravenshoe’s welcome sign states its case plainly: Queensland’s highest town, about 920 metres up where the Tablelands tilt toward the savanna. The air is cool, the wind farm turns lazily on the ridge, and the town wears its timber-and-rail history comfortably. Most visitors come for one reason, ten minutes down the road, and it’s a good one.

Millstream Falls

Big Millstream Falls is reputedly the widest single-drop waterfall in Australia (the parks service itself uses the “reputedly”, and we respect the honesty): a broad curtain of water pouring over a basalt ledge into a huge amphitheatre, reached by a short, easy track from the car park. In the wet season it’s a thundering wall; in the dry it splits into elegant strands. Either way it’s gloriously uncrowded compared with the famous circuit falls, and the lookout serves it whole. Little Millstream Falls, nearby, adds a smaller, swim-adjacent sibling for completists.

Millstream Falls, the actual reason to come

Queensland Parks describes Millstream Falls as reputedly the widest single-drop falls in Australia, and it sits within 4.5 kilometres of Ravenshoe, which makes this one of the easiest big waterfalls in the far north to reach. There is a lookout, picnic tables with some sheltered, and toilets. Camping is not permitted. At the time of writing there were no park alerts, but check before you drive, because that changes with the weather.

How far it is

Queensland Parks puts the falls at 147 kilometres from Cairns via the Gillies Highway. That is a long way for a waterfall, so do not do it as a single-item day trip. Ravenshoe works as the far end of a Tablelands loop, or as a stop on the way through to the Savannah country, rather than an out-and-back from the coast.

What the town is for

Fuel, food, a pub and a toilet, in the middle of country where those things get sparse fast. Ravenshoe sits high, and high on the Tablelands means genuinely cold on a winter morning in a way that catches coastal visitors completely off guard. Pack a jacket even if you left Cairns in a singlet.

When to go

The falls are best after rain, which means the wet season and the months just after, and that is also when the roads are least predictable. The compromise most people want is the shoulder either side of the wet: enough water going over the edge to be worth the drive, and a road you can rely on.

The town and the extras

Ravenshoe town does country essentials with highland character: bakery, pubs, a heritage rail story, and the Windy Hill wind farm photogenically stationed on the ridge (the name was not a marketing stretch). Twenty-odd minutes further west, Innot Hot Springs delivers the region’s oddest bathing experience: hot water seeping up through the sand of Nettle Creek, where you dig your own bath for free, plus a modest commercial springs park next door with proper thermal pools (check ahead in the wet season). Tablelands itineraries rarely reach this far south, which is precisely the appeal.
