Holloways Beach: Where Cairns Does Sunday Morning

Beach closed, checked 11 September 2026Surf Life Saving Queensland currently lists Holloways Beach as closed on its North Queensland beach report, with the reason given as coastal erosion and the entry “No Lifeguard Service”. There is no patrol here at the moment. Some regional tourism listings still describe Holloways as the closest patrolled beach to Cairns, and that is out of date. For a patrolled swim, Trinity Beach and Palm Cove are both open seven days. Check the SLSQ beach report for the current position before you travel. The cafes, the walk and the river mouth are all unaffected.

Every city has a place its locals go when they want the beach without committing to a drive. For Cairns, it’s Holloways: ten-ish minutes from the city and the airport, a long unhurried band of sand between the Barron River mouth and Yorkeys Knob, with a beachfront cafe scene that turned “quick swim” into “long brunch” years ago and never looked back.

Holloways doesn’t do resorts, coach tours or occasion dining. It does flat whites with sea views, dogs with sandy noses, and the general air of a suburb that got the work-life balance memo early.

The beach

The sand runs long and generous, backed by casuarinas and beach almonds, with the mouth of the Barron River marking its southern end and a quiet residential esplanade behind. It’s a walking, jogging and dog-walking beach first (the off-leash stretch at the designated end hosts the morning parade), a lazing beach second, and a swimming beach on the region’s standard terms: check the SLSQ beach report for current patrol and enclosure status before you swim, and save river-mouth ends for walking only, as everywhere in the Far North.

The lookout moment here is horizontal rather than elevated: from the sand, the full sweep of Trinity Bay opens up, with the city’s ranges to the south and the beaches chain stretching north. Sunrise does its best work here, and the cafe opens accordingly.

The brunch scene

Holloways’ beachfront cafes are the suburb’s civic institutions, serving the city’s most contested weekend tables: sea-facing, breezy and unbothered. The rhythm is a local liturgy: beach walk, coffee, breakfast that outlasts the parking intentions, maybe a second coffee, home via the bakery. Visitors are welcomed into this system without paperwork. Weekdays offer the same view with half the wait.

A small cluster of local shops and takeaways rounds out the strip; for everything bigger, the city and Smithfield are both ten-odd minutes away.

Staying at Holloways

Accommodation is holiday houses, apartments and B&B-scale stays rather than resorts, at some of the gentlest prices on the coast, with the airport conveniently close for early flights (and mercifully out of earshot). It suits travellers who want local texture over facilities: you’re living in a suburb here, and the suburb is good at it.

FAQs

Can you swim at Holloways Beach? Swim according to the day’s conditions: check the SLSQ beach report for current patrol and enclosure status, swim only at flagged areas when patrols operate, and keep clear of the river mouth. Plenty of Holloways days are walking-and-brunch days, and the suburb is arguably better for it.

How far is Holloways Beach from Cairns? About ten to fifteen minutes from both the city and the airport: it’s the closest of the Northern Beaches’ cafe strips to town, which is exactly why locals default to it.

Why do people go to Holloways Beach? The brunch, mostly, and the long quiet sand attached to it. It’s the local’s Sunday-morning beach: cafes on the beachfront, dogs on the off-leash stretch, zero coach traffic.

Is Holloways Beach good for families? Good for a relaxed beach-and-breakfast morning; families wanting reliably patrolled swimming and holiday facilities are better based at Trinity Beach and visiting Holloways for the cafes.

Is there accommodation at Holloways Beach? Holiday houses, apartments and small stays at friendly prices, close to the airport. It suits independent travellers happy to live like locals for a week.

Can you walk from Holloways to other beaches? Machans Beach sits across the Barron River mouth to the south (drive around, don’t wade; the river mouth is strictly off limits), and Yorkeys Knob is a few minutes’ drive north. The long beach itself is the main event.
