Every region hides one absurdly good cheap experience. Ours is Ellis Beach: the last beach in the Cairns chain, where the suburbs run out, the Captain Cook Highway swings onto the sand, and an old-school oceanfront holiday park lets you camp so close to the water that the tide functions as white noise. Beachfront bungalow-and-campsite living, metres from a patrolled beach, for a fraction of resort rates twenty minutes south. The maths has never made sense, and long may it not.

The beach
Ellis is a long, curving ribbon of sand pinned between the highway and the sea, which sounds compromised and is somehow the opposite: the road brought the lifesaving club (patrolling here for generations), the campground and the bar, and the beach kept its wild, unmanicured length. A seasonal stinger enclosure sits at the flagged area, and Surf Life Saving Queensland’s North Queensland beach report lists Ellis Beach as OPEN with lifeguards “7 days a week”, 9am to 5pm (checked 13 September 2026; the SLSQ beach report carries the day’s status), and the rest of the beach belongs to walkers, fishers and the sunrise.
North of Ellis, the settlements stop and the Great Barrier Reef Drive begins its famous coast-hugging run to Port Douglas: the beach doubles as the gateway to the best road trip in the north, and watching the traffic peel past from a beach towel is its own small pleasure.
As of September 2026 the beach has a brand new surf life saving club sitting right behind the flags, relocated to the beach side of the highway after a fifteen year campaign. See the new Ellis Beach surf club for what it means if you are planning a swim.
The holiday park and the bar
The oceanfront holiday park is the suburb: absolute-beachfront campsites, cabins and bungalows strung along the sand under the palms. It books out fast for the dry season, and its long-running reputation on the caravan circuit is national. Next door, the beach bar and grill flips burgers and pours cold ones metres from the tide line, servicing campers, day trippers, motorcyclists mid-coast-road-pilgrimage and locals who drive up specifically for the fish and chips with sea spray.
That’s the whole town, and it’s plenty.

Day-tripping to Ellis
No camping gear? Ellis still earns the drive: it’s the Northern Beaches’ best quick escape when the southern beaches feel busy, the swimming enclosure and burger situation make a complete afternoon, and Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures sits ten minutes north for a full Wangetti pairing. Sunset here, with the ranges going purple behind the palms, out-performs venues charging cover.
Things to do at Ellis Beach
Ellis Beach is the last beach before the road turns inland, and it sits at the end of the open section of the Wangetti Trail.
