Somewhere in your Cairns planning, someone will say “but is Green Island actually good, or is it just close?” Here is the local ruling: it’s both, and the second part is nothing to apologise for. A genuine coral cay sitting directly on a Great Barrier Reef platform, 45 minutes from the city marina, where you step off soft white sand and are immediately snorkelling the actual reef. Close is the superpower.
The island itself is a 6,000-year-old accident of coral rubble and current that grew itself a rainforest, became a national park inside the World Heritage Area, and now hosts one of the easiest world-class days in Australian travel. Here’s how to do it right.

Getting there
Fast catamarans run from the Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal several times daily, taking about 45 minutes. The main players are Great Adventures (the big frequent ferry) and Big Cat Green Island Reef Cruises, with half-day and full-day options; the romantic route is Ocean Free, a sailing boat that anchors off the island and mixes reef snorkelling with island time. Half-day trips exist, but the island rewards the full day; you’ll want the unhurried version.
The two main Green Island ferries, side by side. Fares checked 11 September 2026.

Our answer: Great Adventures if you want the long day, and the transfer-only fare is the one to book if you are happy snorkelling off the beach. Big Cat is a couple of dollars cheaper and leaves later, which suits a slow start. One thing nobody points out: Big Cat charges the same for the half day as the full day, so there is no reason to take the half.
Check before you bookEvery fare above was checked against the operators’ own websites on 11 September 2026. Tour prices move constantly, sometimes within the same day, and seasonal fares, online-only specials, fuel levies and reef tax all change what you actually pay at checkout. Treat this as a guide to the shape of the decision, not a quote. Confirm the current price, the departure time and what is included direct with Great Adventures and Big Cat Green Island Reef Cruises before you commit.

The snorkelling (this is why you came)
The reef flat around Green Island is home to seagrass meadows, coral gardens and a resident population of green sea turtles that graze with the calm of animals who know they’re protected. Fins on at the beach, faces down, and within minutes you’re over coral bommies with parrotfish going about their crunchy business.
Local intel for your best hour in the water: snorkel early in the day when visibility is at its kindest and the day’s crowd is still queueing for coffee, and drift the edges of the swimming areas where the seagrass meets the coral (that’s turtle territory). Stinger suits are provided or hireable in season (roughly November to May), and flotation gear is freely available: this is genuinely beginner-friendly reef.
Prefer to stay dry? The glass-bottom boat tours run all day, and Seawalker helmet diving lets you walk on the seafloor with your glasses on and your hair dry, which remains one of the strangest and best sentences in Queensland tourism.

The island itself
Beyond the beach, a free interpretive boardwalk (about 1.3 kilometres of it) loops through the island’s improbable rainforest interior, and the full beach circumnavigation takes around 45 minutes of soft-sand strolling: do it late in the day when the crowds thin and the sand goes gold.
The island’s great eccentric is Marineland Melanesia, a family-run crocodile park and gallery of Melanesian artefacts tucked into the interior. For decades it was home to Cassius, officially the world’s largest crocodile in captivity until his death in 2024, and it carries on with keeper talks, big crocs and an atmosphere best described as “wonderfully unchanged since your parents visited”.
Day visitors arriving with the ferry operators get access to island facilities including the resort’s day-visitor pool, cafes and gear hire; it’s a comfortable island, not a castaway one, and families in particular appreciate the plumbing.
Should you stay overnight?
Green Island Resort operates year-round, and overnighting is the connoisseur’s move: after the last ferry leaves around late afternoon, a few dozen guests get a private coral cay, sunset walks with nobody in frame, and the reef at dawn. It’s a special-occasion spend, and the people who do it never shut up about it, with cause.

Honest talk: crowds, and how to beat them
Green Island is the most popular island off Cairns, and the middle of the day is peak human: boats overlap, the main beach fills, the pool gets loud. This is the trade for convenience, and it’s manageable with tactics. Take the earliest departure, do your snorkelling first, have lunch when everyone else swims, then walk the boardwalk and far beaches mid-afternoon. Or book the sailing option and let the crowd be something you observe from an anchored distance. If crowds are your dealbreaker entirely, Fitzroy Island or the Frankland Islands are your pages.
FAQs
How far is Green Island from Cairns? About 27 kilometres, roughly 45 minutes by fast catamaran from the Reef Fleet Terminal in the middle of the city. Several departures run daily, year round.
Is Green Island good for snorkelling? Yes, especially for first-timers and families: coral gardens and seagrass meadows start right off the beach, green sea turtles are seen daily, and calm, supervised swimming areas plus free flotation gear make it about as friendly as reef snorkelling gets.
Green Island or Fitzroy Island? Green for reef-off-the-beach snorkelling, turtles and a packaged, effortless day. Fitzroy for rainforest walks, Nudey Beach and a wilder feel. They’re different enough to justify doing both; our Green Island or Fitzroy Island head-to-head has the fares, hours ashore and walks side by side.
How long do you need on Green Island? Take the full day. Half-day trips exist and feel like leaving a movie at the good bit. Snorkel early, boardwalk and beaches in the afternoon.
Can you stay overnight on Green Island? Yes, Green Island Resort operates year-round, and evenings on the island after the day boats leave are the best-kept version of the place.
Do non-swimmers have anything to do? Plenty: glass-bottom boat tours, Seawalker helmet diving (you walk on the seafloor, no swimming required), the rainforest boardwalk, Marineland Melanesia and a day pool. Green Island is arguably the region’s best reef day for non-swimmers.
Are there stingers at Green Island? Stinger season (roughly November to May) applies here as everywhere in the region; operators provide or hire stinger suits and the swimming areas are managed. Suit up in season and carry on.
Is Green Island too touristy? It’s popular, and the middle of the day shows it. Go early, snorkel first and stay late, and you’ll spend the crowded hours fed, shaded and smug. The reef under the surface doesn’t know what a crowd is.
