If you have booked a hot air balloon out of Cairns and you are picturing a gentle drift over the reef, we should sort that out now. The balloons do not go near the water. They launch from farmland around Mareeba on the Atherton Tablelands, an hour inland and about 400 metres up. Cairns is where you get collected, not where you take off.
That hour in the coach is the cost of entry, and it happens at four in the morning. The trade is a good one. The Tablelands give you air the coast simply cannot, which is why balloons go up over Mareeba almost daily while the beachfront stays resolutely balloon free. Here is what the operator publishes, what it does not, and what the morning actually looks like.
Where the flights launch from
Every Cairns flight takes off around the township of Mareeba, in the highlands of the Atherton Tablelands, roughly an hour west of the CBD. There is no fixed launch pad. The operator flies from several properties and the pilot picks the site on the morning based on wind, so takeoff and landing spots change daily. Self drivers meet at the Mareeba Heritage Centre.
Pickup times, and when you are actually back
This is the part people underestimate. Pickup from Cairns city hotels is around 4am, published as 3.50am to 4am in summer and 4am to 4.30am in winter. Northern beaches pickups, covering Palm Cove, Trinity Beach and Kewarra Beach, run from about 5am. Transfers are door to door between south Cairns and Palm Cove, and you wait in the hotel lobby, not on the footpath.
Launch is around 6.30am, you are down near 7.50am, and drop off in Cairns city is between 9.30am and 10am, or 9am to 9.30am for the northern beaches. An express option gets you back by 9am. Call it five and a half to six hours door to door, which is our arithmetic from the published pickup and drop off times rather than a figure the operator states. The operator will also drop you at the Reef Fleet Terminal, Skyrail or the airport if you ask.
How long you are actually flying
Most flights run between 39 and 65 minutes. The operator is upfront that it flies to the conditions, not to a stopwatch, and that a safe landing site matters more than hitting the hour. Cruising height averages about 3,000 feet, and baskets carry 16 to 24 people, so this is shared.

Prices, tiers and breakfast
Prices are in Australian dollars (AUD) per person, as listed by the operator, and correct at the time of writing. The Classic with return transfers is $495: flight, coach transfers, commentary, digital photo package, certificate and a glass of sparkling wine or juice on landing. From the northern beaches it is also $495. Self drive to Mareeba is $450, though the same page also lists a Tablelands self drive at $390 carrying an expired validity note, so check what you are actually buying at checkout.
Combinations bolt the balloon onto the rest of the day: Kuranda Village and Scenic Railway $553, Skyrail and Kuranda Rail $627, Green Island $622, outer reef $829. The VIP upgrade is $880 for two only, a private balloon starts at $3,600, and spectators are $60. The operator also offers a local discount with proof of residency.
Breakfast is not included on the Classic flights. You get the bubbly or juice on landing, though the driver will drop you at a cafe. A cooked breakfast at Palm Cove comes only with the VIP upgrade and the private experience.
Age, weight and mobility
The minimum age is three years. Under 13s must be accompanied by an adult, and 13 to 17 year olds need an adult for the transfers. No maximum weight per passenger is published, but if you are over 100kg the operator asks to be told at booking so you can be positioned correctly. Every passenger must climb into and out of the basket unassisted, over a 1.2 metre wall with footholds, and must follow the pilot’s landing instructions, which can include bracing and taking the landing through your legs. Pregnant passengers may fly up to 13 weeks, not beyond.
If the weather cancels
Balloons want light, stable wind, around 4 to 6 miles per hour. Pilots check forecasts through the day and the call is made the evening before. You are notified by 5pm if conditions are unsuitable, then offered another date or a 100 per cent refund for bookings of nine or fewer. Groups of ten or more have a 10 per cent booking fee retained. Agent bookings are refunded at the agent’s discretion.
Cancelling on your own account is stricter, and the notice period you need to give is set by the operator. Confirm your cancellation and change window with them in writing when you book, so you know where you stand. No shows are never refunded.
Why up there and not down here
Mareeba sits at about 400 metres on the drier western side of the range, and the numbers are stark. The Mareeba weather station records mean annual rainfall of 918mm, with July, August and September averaging 7.1mm, 6.8mm and 5.3mm, and barely one rain day a month. Mean 9am wind is about 5.1km/h. Coastal Cairns gets the sea breeze and the wet season.
What you actually see at dawn
Not the reef. It is too far east and the operator says so plainly. What you get is the Great Dividing Range going pink, and beneath you the working country of the Tablelands: mango, lychee and banana blocks, sugar cane, avocado orchards and grazing land watered out of Tinaroo Dam. Mareeba Shire put its agricultural production at about 362 million dollars in 2020/21, the latest figure the shire publishes, and from 3,000 feet it reads as a quilt. Kangaroos move through the paddocks at first light and cockatoos come up off the trees. Then the chase crew finds you.
FAQs
Do the balloons fly over the Great Barrier Reef? No. Flights operate over Mareeba on the Atherton Tablelands, about an hour inland, and the reef is not visible from the balloon. You may see the ocean in the distance on a clear day. Coastal weather is not reliable enough to fly from.
What time do I get picked up in Cairns? Around 4am from the city, published as 3.50am to 4am in summer and 4am to 4.30am in winter, and about 5am from the northern beaches. Exact times are confirmed at booking.
Is breakfast included? Not on the standard flights. You get a glass of sparkling wine or juice on landing, and the driver can drop you at a cafe on the way home. A cooked breakfast at Palm Cove comes only with the VIP upgrade and private experience.
What happens if the weather cancels my flight? You will hear by 5pm the afternoon before, and you are offered another date or a full refund if your booking is for nine or fewer. Bookings of ten or more have a 10 per cent booking fee retained.
Is there a weight limit? No maximum weight per passenger is published. If you are over 100kg, tell the operator at booking. The real requirement is mobility: you must climb in and out of a 1.2 metre basket unassisted and brace for landing.
