The Hilton at Palm Cove Has Slipped to 2027 (And Where Did the Ferns Go?)

Hilton is now taking Palm Cove reservations from 1 June 2027, well past every previously reported date. Plus a question for locals about the old atrium ferns.

If you have been waiting on the Hilton at Palm Cove, sit down. Hilton’s own booking engine is currently taking reservations for 1 June 2027 and beyond.

That is a long way from where this started. Hilton’s 2024 announcement pointed at the first quarter of 2026. Tourism Tropical North Queensland’s update in May 2026 said September 2026. More recent write-ups landed on 31 October 2026. Hilton’s own site, checked on 09/09/2026, is the only one of those that can actually take your money, and it says June 2027.

We are not calling that a confirmed opening date, because an opening date and a first bookable night are not always the same thing. But it is the operator’s own system, and it is the most reliable signal available. If you were planning a Palm Cove trip around this, plan around something else.

What is being built

Hilton Palm Cove Cairns Resort & Spa is listed at 10 Coral Coast Drive, Palm Cove. It is a refurbishment of an existing property rather than a new build, reported by Cairns Local News and others as the former Grand Chancellor.

From Hilton’s 2024 signing announcement, the property will have 140 rooms, managed under agreement with Tyche Asset Management, with an outdoor pool, two dining outlets including an all day restaurant, two bars with one at the pool, a kids club, fitness centre, spa, and 450 square metres of function and meeting space.

It is Hilton’s third property in the region, after Hilton Cairns and DoubleTree by Hilton Cairns, and its first at Palm Cove.

Now, a genuine question for the locals

Here is one we cannot answer, and it has been bugging us since we drove past this week.

Does anyone else remember the massive fish bone ferns that used to hang in the atrium and along the driveway there? Or are we dreaming?

We have a clear memory of great heavy baskets of them, the proper old school Far North Queensland look, the kind of thing that made a building feel like it belonged in the tropics rather than being airlifted in. Driving past this week, they look completely gone. Not trimmed back. Gone.

We have searched and found nothing either way, which is not surprising. Nobody photographs the ferns. They photograph the pool.

So if you worked there, stayed there, drank there, or just have a better memory than us, tell us. We would genuinely like to know whether they were as good as we remember, whether they came out as part of the refurbishment, and whether anything is going back in their place. If they are gone for good that is a small shame, because they were the sort of detail a brand refit tends not to replace.

What it means for Palm Cove

Palm Cove already does the high end better than anywhere else on this coast, so another 140 rooms under a global brand is not going to reinvent the place. What it will do is put more midweek and conference traffic on the esplanade, given that function space, and that tends to show up in restaurant bookings before it shows up anywhere else.

For now, the practical answer is that Palm Cove has plenty of good options already. Our Palm Cove guide covers the strip, and where to stay in Cairns sets Palm Cove against the city and the other northern beaches, which is the decision most people are actually making.

We will update this once Hilton publishes a firm opening date.
