Game fishing in Cairns: the black marlin season, explained

Cairns is the heavy tackle capital of the world. When the black marlin season runs, what a charter really costs, where the boats fish, and the closed seasons that catch people out.

Cairns is the heavy tackle capital of the world and the site has been quiet about it for far too long. Between September and December the biggest black marlin on the planet gather on the outer reef north of here, and a small fleet of boats built for nothing else goes out after them. This is the guide to how that works, what it costs, and what the rest of us can do if a grander is not on the cards.

When the season actually runs

The heavy tackle season is spring into early summer. Operators put it slightly differently: Fishing Cairns says mid-September to mid-December, Big Fish Down Under says peak season runs early September through to mid-December. Take the overlap and you have late September to early December as the reliable window, with October and November the heart of it. That is also when the tournaments run, which is not a coincidence.

What is actually out there

Black marlin, and very large ones. Operators regularly report fish in the 800 to 1,000 pound range, and the fish everyone is chasing is a grander, meaning over 1,000 pounds. One operator records three giant marlin over 1,000 pounds in a single day. The grounds run from Cairns north to Lizard Island along the Ribbon Reefs, which is why the longer trips move north as the season progresses rather than running out and back from the marina every day.

What it costs, and why we are not quoting a number

Because nobody publishes one. Every heavy tackle operator we checked lists charter rates as price on application, which is normal at this end of the market where a boat, a crew and a day of fuel are being quoted per vessel rather than per seat. What operators do publish is what is included, and the inclusions are generous: quality tackle and lures, meals, morning and afternoon tea, soft drinks, basic Australian beer and wine with dinner on extended trips. Expect to charter the whole boat rather than buy a seat, and expect the number to have four figures in it.

Day trip or extended trip

Day charters run out of Cairns and back, usually leaving the mooring around 7am with transfers from your accommodation. Extended live-aboard charters are the serious version, and they follow the fish north. One practical detail worth knowing before you book: on extended trips the boat may be based at Cooktown or Lizard Island, which can mean a light aircraft flight at additional cost. Ask where the boat will actually be on your dates.

Tag and release, and why this fishery still works

The Cairns fleet has run tag and release for decades, and members of the Cairns Professional Game Fishing Association use circle hooks, which hook in the corner of the jaw rather than the gut and give a released fish a far better chance. That is the reason a fishery this heavily targeted has held up. If you are booking, this is a fair question to ask an operator, and the answer you want is that the fish goes back.

The tournaments, if you would rather watch

You do not need a boat to be part of the season. The Cairns Bluewater Billfish Tournament, run by the Cairns Bluewater Game Fishing Club, is on 16 to 19 September 2026, with the briefing on the Wednesday, three days of fishing from the Thursday and the presentation dinner on the Saturday night, based at the Shangri-La at the Marina. The Lizard Island Black Marlin Classic follows on 18 to 23 October 2026. The marina at weigh-in time during a tournament is one of the better free spectacles in town.

If a grander is not in the budget

Most fishing in Cairns is not heavy tackle. Reef fishing trips on the outer reef go after coral trout and red emperor and sell by the seat rather than the boat. Estuary and river fishing, which is what most locals actually do, targets barramundi, mangrove jack and fingermark. There is a light tackle season out of Cairns in the warmer months when smaller black marlin are around, which is a far more affordable way to catch a billfish.

The rules that catch people out

Two closures matter here and both are set by the Queensland Government. Barramundi is closed on the east coast from 1 November to 31 January, every year, so the summer barra trip a lot of visitors imagine does not exist. Coral reef fin fish, which covers coral trout and red emperor among others, has two five day closures each year in October and November, and the exact dates move with the moon, so check the current ones on the Department of Primary Industries closures page before you book a reef fishing day in those months. Size and possession limits apply to everything and they are the angler’s responsibility, not the charter’s.
