Christmas and New Year in Cairns: what is on and what is shut

What actually happens in Cairns over Christmas and New Year: the public holidays, carols and fireworks, what is open and what is shut, and the weather reality.

Christmas in Cairns is not the Christmas on the card. No snow, no crisp air, no jumper at any point. Instead: humidity you can lean on, a storm most afternoons, and a Lagoon on the Esplanade doing the heavy lifting for everyone who assumed they would be swimming at a beach.

This is what actually happens here over late December and early January, for visitors who have booked a tropical Christmas and for locals who just want to know whether the tip is open on Boxing Day.

One note on dates. Council publishes its Christmas and New Year details late, usually from about mid November, and nothing is published yet for December 2026. Where that is so, we say so and give the most recent confirmed edition instead.

The public holidays you are planning around

In 2026, Christmas Day falls on Friday 25/12/2026 and Boxing Day on Saturday 26/12/2026. Because Boxing Day lands on a weekend, Queensland gazettes an additional public holiday on Monday 28/12/2026. New Year’s Day is Friday 01/01/2027. Christmas Eve, Thursday 24/12/2026, is a part public holiday from 6pm to midnight only. That extra Monday is why half of Cairns disappears to the Tablelands for the week.

Carols, lights and the lead-up

Every year the season builds to Carols in the Park at Munro Martin Parklands, free, which council calls the city’s most beloved festive tradition.

Carols is the big one. Free, at Munro Martin Parklands, gates in the late afternoon and the main show a couple of hours into the evening, moving indoors to the Cairns Performing Arts Centre if the sky properly opens up. The 2026 date is not yet published. The most recent confirmed edition was Sunday 14/12/2025, gates 4pm, main event 6.30pm to 8.30pm. That is the pattern, not a promise.

New Year’s Eve

Cairns does New Year’s Eve twice in one night, so families are not stuck up past midnight with wrecked kids. Every year there is a free Esplanade concert, early family fireworks, and a second display at midnight.

The 2026 into 2027 programme is not published. The most recent confirmed edition, on 31/12/2025, ran a free concert on the Esplanade Western Events Lawn from 5pm, family fireworks at 8.30pm at the Palm Cove jetty and at Walker Road Sports Precinct in Edmonton, midnight fireworks on the city Esplanade, and extra late buses to about 2.45am. Port Douglas runs its own night, most recently fireworks at 8pm over Dickson Inlet and again at midnight.

Christmas Day on the Esplanade

The Lagoon opens normally, the free public barbecues along the Esplanade run 6am to 9pm, and by about nine in the morning every shaded table has an extended family, an esky and a trestle of food on it.

The Lagoon opens Thursday to Tuesday 6am to 9pm, and Wednesday noon to 9pm, closed Wednesday mornings for cleaning. Council has confirmed in past years that it runs as usual through the holiday period, and Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday. Alcohol is not permitted at the Lagoon under its conditions of use, which catches a lot of people out.

What is open and what is shut

Queensland law does most of the deciding. Non-exempt shops, meaning the large supermarkets and department stores, must close on Christmas Day and shut by 6pm on Christmas Eve. Exempt shops such as chemists, service stations and restaurants have unrestricted hours, although independent retail shops must also close on Christmas Day unless they are predominantly a food or grocery store. The Office of Industrial Relations publishes an allowable hours schedule each year, so check it for Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Alcohol is the one that trips people up. You cannot buy takeaway alcohol anywhere in Queensland on Christmas Day. Licensed venues may serve from 10am to midnight, but only with a meal and only in an area set aside for dining, so buy what you need on Christmas Eve. On New Year’s Eve every Queensland licensee can serve through to 2am.

On the Council side, in recent years kerbside bins have been collected as normal including on Christmas Day, libraries have closed from lunchtime on Christmas Eve until early January, and waste transfer stations have closed on Christmas Day. Dates shift each year, so confirm before you drive a trailer of green waste anywhere. For attractions and reef trips, check the operator’s own website. Some run straight through, some run reduced, some shut.

The weather, told straight

Late December and January are the wet season, not a bit damp, properly wet. On long term Bureau of Meteorology averages for Cairns Aero, December has a mean maximum of 31.5 degrees, a mean minimum of 23.4 degrees and about 193.8mm of rain across 10.7 rain days. January jumps to roughly 404.8mm across 15.8 rain days.

The humidity is the part people underestimate. Do outdoor things in the morning, accept that the afternoon belongs to a storm, and keep a wet weather option for every day. The Australian cyclone season runs November to April, so watch Bureau warnings.

Stingers, crocodiles and swimming

The marine stinger season in north Queensland runs November to May, covering the entire Christmas and New Year period. Box jellyfish and Irukandji are both present.

Stinger nets at patrolled beaches are designed to keep out large box jellyfish and tentacle fragments. Surf Life Saving Queensland’s own marine stinger procedure states plainly that the enclosures are not effective against the smaller Irukandji. A full body stinger suit is the protection that works, and suits can be hired at the main patrolled beaches. Swim between the flags, inside the net, in a suit.

If someone is stung, call triple zero for an ambulance and douse the area liberally with vinegar for at least 30 seconds. Irukandji symptoms can be delayed, so a sting that seems minor still needs attention. Estuarine crocodiles live here too. Obey crocodile warning signs, stay away from river mouths and mangrove edges, and never swim in unpatrolled water.

If you booked a tropical Christmas expecting a beach day

The kind version of the truth: Cairns city has no swimming beach. The foreshore is tidal mudflat and mangrove, which is why the Lagoon exists. The swimming beaches are north of the city at Yorkeys Knob, Trinity Beach and Palm Cove, and in stinger season you want the netted enclosure and a suit.

So adjust the picture rather than the booking, the way locals do. The standard local Christmas is barbecue in the morning, Lagoon in the middle of the day, home before the storm, or a run up the range to a Tablelands swimming hole. A reef day is often the best weather you get, so book it early and keep a spare day.

FAQs

Is there a New Year’s Eve fireworks display in Cairns? Yes, in most years several. The pattern is a free Esplanade concert, early family fireworks around 8.30pm at spots such as Palm Cove and Edmonton, then a midnight display in the city. The programme for 31/12/2026 is not yet published. The most recent confirmed edition ran on 31/12/2025.

When is Carols in the Park? Council runs it every year at Munro Martin Parklands, free, on a December evening. The 2026 date is not yet published. The most recent confirmed edition was Sunday 14/12/2025, gates from 4pm and the main event 6.30pm to 8.30pm.

Can I buy alcohol on Christmas Day in Cairns? Not from a bottle shop. Takeaway sales are prohibited across Queensland on Christmas Day. Licensed venues may serve from 10am to midnight, but only with a meal in a dining area. Buy what you need on Christmas Eve, and note that alcohol is never permitted at the Lagoon.

Are the supermarkets open on Christmas Day and Boxing Day? The large supermarkets must close on Christmas Day and shut by 6pm on Christmas Eve. Smaller exempt shops, service stations and chemists can trade. Boxing Day trading is allowed, and in 2026 there is also a public holiday on Monday 28/12/2026.

Can I swim at the beach in Cairns at Christmas? Only with care. This is the middle of stinger season, November to May, and Cairns city has no swimming beach. Use the Lagoon or the netted enclosures at the northern beaches, wear a stinger suit, and take crocodile warning signs seriously.
