Driving the Captain Cook Highway: Cairns to Port Douglas

The Captain Cook Highway between Cairns and Port Douglas is one of the great coastal drives. Where to stop, what is actually open, and how long to really allow.

The Captain Cook Highway between Cairns and Port Douglas is the drive people remember longer than the resort they drove to. It runs about an hour without stopping, which is exactly the wrong way to do it. Give it half a day and it becomes the best value thing you will do all week, because the road itself is free and most of the good stops are too.

How long to actually allow

An hour if you are late for a booking. Three to four hours if you are doing it properly, with a lookout, a swim stop and a walk. If you are adding Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures, which says most visitors spend around four hours there, that is a full day on its own and you should not try to bolt anything else onto it.

Rex Lookout

The headline stop, and the one every second photograph of this coast comes from. It sits high on the shoulder of the road with the beach curving away below, and it is also a launch site for paragliders, so on a good day you get an airshow with the view. Our guide to the region’s lookouts covers where it sits among the others.

Ellis Beach

The last beach before the road turns inland, and the one locals use. It is worth knowing that a new Ellis Beach Surf Life Saving Club opened on 6 September 2026 on the beach side of the highway. Patrol arrangements here are seasonal, so check current status on Beachsafe rather than assuming, and treat the standard far north swimming rules as non-negotiable: stingers in the warmer months, and no swimming outside patrolled areas or when a beach is closed.

The Wangetti Trail, if you want to walk part of it

Stage one of the Wangetti Trail opened on 25 September 2024 and runs 7.8 kilometres from the Palm Cove jetty to Ellis Beach. It is a shared two-way track for walkers and mountain bike riders, hikers have right of way, and it gives you a section of this coast that the highway cannot. It is exposed, so carry water and start early.

Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures

At Wangetti, roughly halfway. Adults AUD $50, children aged 4 to 15 $25, and a family of two adults and two children $125. It is open 8.30am to 5pm every day, closed Christmas Day, and closed during Cairns Ironman because the highway shuts. Free parking for cars, caravans and coaches. Most visitors spend around four hours, so treat it as the destination rather than a stop.

Driving it safely

The winding coastal section between Ellis Beach and Wangetti is narrow, cambered and busy with people slowing down for the view. Overtaking opportunities are limited and the drivers behind you are often locals with somewhere to be, so use the pull-off bays rather than braking for photographs on the road. There is very little lighting, so if you are driving it after dark, slow down for wildlife. The road closes for the Cairns Ironman, which catches people out every year.

Fuel, food and phone signal

Fill up in Cairns or at Smithfield. Options thin out considerably north of Palm Cove, and while you will not run dry on a one hour drive, you will pay for the privilege if you leave it late. Phone coverage is generally fine along this stretch but drops in places on the headlands.

Doing it the other way

Southbound in the late afternoon is the better light, with the sun behind you and the water lit up rather than glaring. If you are staying in Port Douglas and driving down for a day in Cairns, plan the return for the golden hour and stop at Rex Lookout on the way back rather than the way up. Carrying on past Port Douglas? Our Cairns to Cape Tribulation drive guide picks up the route at Mossman and covers the Daintree ferry fares, hours and queues.
