Cairns Festival 2026: Ten Nights of Free Live Music on the Esplanade

If you’re in Cairns in late winter, clear your evenings. Cairns Festival runs from 28 August to 6 September 2026, and the centrepiece is ten straight nights of free live music on the Esplanade.

Ten nights, more than 40 artists, no ticket

The Esplanade Festival Hub is the heart of it. Cairns Regional Council has confirmed more than 40 artists across ten themed nights on the Main Stage, spanning First Nations hip hop, indie pop, ska, country, disco and a stack of emerging local talent. It’s free to walk in, which makes it one of the best value nights out in the city all year.

A big year for Cairns

There’s an extra reason to celebrate in 2026. The festival is the soundtrack to the city’s 150th anniversary, so expect the milestone to thread through the program. Mayor Amy Eden put it simply: every great festival has a soundtrack, and for ten nights the Esplanade will come alive with music.

More than music

The live music is just one slice. Across the ten days, Cairns Festival delivers a mix of free and ticketed arts, culture and entertainment spread across the city’s cultural precincts. The full program, including ticketed shows, goes up at cairnsfest.com.au. It’s one of the biggest dates on our Cairns festivals and events calendar.

Planning your visit

The Festival Hub is on the Esplanade, walkable from most city accommodation. A few things worth knowing:

  • The free Esplanade Lagoon reopens on 17 August, just before the festival, so a daytime swim and an evening of live music make an easy combination.
  • Cairns fills up during festival week, so if you’re travelling in, book accommodation early.
  • Nights are mild and dry in early September, but bring a light layer for after dark.

The short version

Cairns Festival 2026 runs 28 August to 6 September, with ten free nights of live music at the Esplanade Festival Hub and a wider program of free and ticketed events across the city. Check the official site for the full line-up closer to the date.
