Good news if you had a Lagoon swim pencilled in. The Cairns Esplanade Lagoon is open again after its scheduled two-yearly maintenance shutdown, and it has come back looking sharp.
The free saltwater lagoon on the waterfront closed for five weeks over winter, which is deliberately the quietest stretch of the year for it. We covered the closure back in July. Cairns Regional Council confirmed on 18 August 2026 that it had reopened.
What actually got done
More than a cosmetic tidy-up. The maintenance program covered render defect repairs, repairs to subsidence-related concrete damage, pipework and pump repairs including valve overhauls, cleaning of the balance and backwash tanks, timber deck repairs and treatment, scheduled change room maintenance, repainting of the amenities building, and renewed signage.
Two details we enjoyed: 78 tonnes of fresh sand went in, and the fish sculptures got a clean and polish. If you have photos of them from earlier in the year, it is worth taking the same shot again.
Opening hours, including the one that catches people out
Here is the bit worth committing to memory:
- Thursday to Tuesday, 6.00am to 9.00pm
- Wednesday, 12.00pm to 9.00pm
- Public holidays, 6.00am to 9.00pm
That Wednesday listing is not a typo. The Lagoon is closed every Wednesday morning for weekly maintenance and does not open until midday. It catches out a steady stream of visitors who turn up for an early swim, so if Wednesday is your only free morning, plan around it.
What you get
The Lagoon is free, it is patrolled by lifeguards during opening hours, and there are public toilets, showers and change rooms in the surrounds. It holds 3.5 megalitres across roughly 4,000 square metres, which Council reckons is about two and a half Olympic pools, and it can take 1,000 people at once. There are also regular yoga and water aerobics sessions.
It is the obvious swim in the city centre year round, and it matters most during marine stinger season, when swimming at unpatrolled beaches is off the table.
The short version
The Lagoon is open. Normal hours are 6.00am to 9.00pm, except Wednesdays when it opens at midday. Entry is free.
