Cairns Esplanade Lagoon Closed for Maintenance: Dates and Where to Swim Instead

The Cairns Esplanade Lagoon closed from 13 July to 16 August 2026 for its two-yearly maintenance. The dates, why, and where to swim in Cairns instead.

Update, 26 August 2026: this closure has ended. The Lagoon reopened in mid-August. See our newer post on the Lagoon reopening and its current opening hours. The article below is left as published on 23 July 2026.

Planning a dip at the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon? Check the dates first. The free saltwater swimming lagoon on the waterfront is closed from Monday 13 July to Sunday 16 August 2026 for its scheduled maintenance, and is expected to reopen on Monday 17 August, weather permitting.

Why the Lagoon is closed

The Lagoon gets a major overhaul every two years, and this round is an AUD $740,000 program that can’t be done while the pool is open. Cairns Regional Council says specialist contractors are working through repairs to the surface, lighting, pumps and amenities.

The job list includes concrete and render repairs, sand replenishment, pipework and pump servicing, timber deck repairs, change-room maintenance, and a clean and polish of the much-loved fish sculptures. Mayor Amy Eden said winter was chosen because it’s the quietest time for the pool, and the aim is to have it looking its best in time for the Cairns Festival and the busy events season.

A heads-up on toilets

The Lagoon amenities building is closed during the works too. The nearest public toilets are at Fogarty Park, a short walk along the Esplanade.

Where to swim instead

The good news is you’re spoiled for choice, and July sits outside marine stinger season, so the ocean is back in play. A few easy options while the Lagoon is out of action:

Always check current signage and safety advice before swimming, and never swim where signs advise against it.

The short version

Lagoon closed 13 July to 16 August 2026, reopening Monday 17 August (weather permitting). Everything else on the Esplanade, the boardwalk, playgrounds, barbecues and the Ferris wheel, stays open as normal.
