Cairns gets busy when a cruise ship is in. The Esplanade fills, the reef boats book out, the Night Markets get a surge and the good tables go early. If you are choosing dates, or just want to know which mornings to get in early, here is the published schedule.
Ports North publishes a live cruise liner schedule for the Port of Cairns. These are the calls listed for September to December 2026, taken from the schedule last updated on 26 August 2026.
The big ship days
These are the ones you will notice around town, all with capacity for more than 2,500 passengers:
- Sunday 13 September, Carnival Splendor, 9.30am to 6pm, capacity 3,016
- Friday 30 October, Crown Princess, 7am to 5pm, capacity 3,062
- Saturday 7 November, Costa Serena, 9am to 7pm, capacity 3,014
- Saturday 5 December, Grand Princess, 9am to 7pm, capacity 2,602
- Carnival Encounter calls repeatedly at capacity 2,596: 7 to 8 September, 29 to 30 September, 28 October, 25 November and 16 December
- Thursday 10 December, Carnival Luminosa, 9.30am to 6.30pm, capacity 2,260
An important caveat: those are vessel capacities as published by Ports North, not booked passenger numbers. A ship rarely sails completely full, and not everyone aboard goes ashore. Treat them as a guide to relative scale.
Days with more than one ship in port
Five days in this window have two or more vessels alongside:
- Tuesday 24 November, two ships: Noordam and Coral Discoverer
- Saturday 28 November, three ships: Azamara Pursuit, Silver Moon and Coral Discoverer
- Saturday 5 December, two ships: Grand Princess and Coral Discoverer
- Thursday 10 December, two ships: Riviera and Carnival Luminosa
- Saturday 19 December, two ships: Le Soleal and Coral Discoverer
Do not read too much into ship count though. Four of those five days are only “multi-ship” because a small expedition vessel is in, and those carry between 72 and 224 passengers. Saturday 28 November has three ships but a combined capacity of just 1,352, which is less than half a single Carnival call. The genuinely busy days are the big-ship days listed above.
September and October are quiet
Worth knowing if you are choosing dates. No day in September or October 2026 has more than one ship in port, and September has only three calls all month. October has eight, but six of those are small expedition ships. If you want Cairns closer to its normal self, spring is a good run.
November and December are when it picks up, with 14 and 12 calls respectively.
How to use this
None of this is a reason to avoid Cairns. The city absorbs cruise days fine, and the reef fleet is big enough to cope. But a few small adjustments help on a big-ship day:
- Book reef trips ahead rather than walking up, especially the popular outer reef operators
- Get to the Esplanade Lagoon early, before 10am, or go late afternoon
- Expect Kuranda to be busy, since it is the classic cruise excursion. Skyrail and the Scenic Railway both fill
- Book dinner, particularly on the waterfront
- Most ships are gone by 6 or 7pm, so the evening is usually back to normal
If you would rather dodge the crowds entirely, our guides to the northern beaches and the Atherton Tablelands cover plenty that cruise excursions never reach.
