Cairns Airport Transfers: Every Option for 2026

Cairns Airport sits just 7km from the city centre, close enough that your holiday can start before the air-conditioning in the car has properly kicked in. Getting from the terminal to your accommodation is simple once you know one thing that has changed in 2026: the old walk-up shuttle desk is gone, so the golden rule now is to sort your transfer before you fly.

Here is how each option actually works, whether you are heading five minutes into town or an hour up the coast to Port Douglas.

The big change: no walk-up shuttle desk

For decades you could land at Cairns and simply walk up to a shuttle counter inside the terminal. That ended when the long-running local operator behind those desks went into liquidation on 31 March 2026, as reported by Newsport. There is no walk-up shuttle counter at the airport now, and confusingly the airport’s own transfers page can still list the old operator, so treat it with caution.

The practical takeaway is the same whichever way you are travelling: pre-book your transfer, or plan to jump in a taxi or rideshare from the rank. Nothing here needs a booking desk that no longer exists. If you are landing alone and that first taxi is the only transport cost of the trip, our solo travel guide explains why.

Straight to a Cairns city hotel

For most people staying in the CBD or on the Esplanade, the airport run is a ten to fifteen minute hop, and you have three easy ways to do it.

Taxi. Each terminal has its own sheltered rank right out front, no booking needed. Cairns Taxis is the only regulated taxi service for the region, the ranks are monitored around the clock, and there are free intercom buttons at the head of each rank if no cab is waiting. Wheelchair-accessible maxi taxis are part of the fleet. A standard airport access charge is added to the meter, as it is at most Australian airports.

Rideshare. Both terminals have marked rideshare pick-up zones, and Uber operates in Cairns with dedicated airport pickup points. Follow the “Ride Booking / Ride Share” signage rather than the taxi rank.

Private transfer. If you would rather have a name on a sign and a fixed price locked in, a pre-booked private car meets you in arrivals and drives straight to your door. It is the calmest option after a long-haul flight or with kids and a pile of luggage, and the one our Cairns for over-60s guide points to for anyone who would rather be met than queue.

Out to Palm Cove and the northern beaches

The beach villages start about fifteen minutes north of the airport. Tropic Wings, a long-established Cairns coach company, now runs daily scheduled airport transfers on its electric coaches from Cairns Airport through the city and Palm Cove up to Port Douglas, meeting you in arrivals with luggage included and dropping you at your accommodation. For a group or a fixed private run to a Palm Cove or Trinity Beach address, a private minibus transfer is the tidy option.

Up to Port Douglas

Port Douglas is about an hour north, a genuinely lovely drive up the Captain Cook Highway with the Coral Sea on your right. The scheduled Tropic Wings coach continues through to Port Douglas, and a couple of dedicated Cairns to Port Douglas shuttle operators run daily services too, all of them pre-book only now. For groups, families or a late-night arrival, a private transfer straight to your Port Douglas accommodation removes the guesswork.

What about the public bus?

Queensland’s buses are famously cheap right now at 50 cents flat, but that network does not reach the airport terminals, so there is no public bus for the airport leg itself. Budget a taxi, rideshare or pre-booked transfer to get into town, and once you are there the 50 cent buses can carry the rest of your trip. We break the car-free life down in our getting around Cairns without a car guide.

One question we get a lot: there is still no hotel at the airport itself, though the first one is now under construction and is a year or two off.

The practical bits

Book any transfer before you fly, especially for late arrivals and for the Port Douglas run, since none of it can be arranged at a walk-up desk anymore. Give operators your flight number so they can track delays. The two terminals, T1 International and T2 Domestic, are a five minute covered walk apart if you need to move between them. And if you are wondering whether to hire a car at all, our car-free guide and our 3-day itinerary will help you decide.

FAQs

Is there a shuttle bus from Cairns Airport?
Yes, but not a walk-up one anymore. Since the previous desk operator went into liquidation in March 2026 there is no shuttle counter at the terminals. Tropic Wings and a couple of dedicated shuttle operators run scheduled services, all pre-booked before you travel.

How far is Cairns Airport from the city?
About 7km, or roughly ten to fifteen minutes by road, making it one of the closest airport-to-city runs of any Australian capital region.

Is there a taxi rank at Cairns Airport?
Yes. Each terminal has its own sheltered rank at the front with no booking needed, monitored around the clock, with free intercom buttons if no cab is waiting and wheelchair-accessible maxi taxis in the fleet.

Does Uber operate at Cairns Airport?
Yes. Both terminals have marked rideshare pick-up zones. Follow the ride share signage rather than the taxi rank.

How do I get from Cairns Airport to Port Douglas?
By scheduled coach, a dedicated Cairns to Port Douglas shuttle, or a private transfer, all pre-booked. It is about an hour up the Captain Cook Highway. There is no public bus for this route.

Can I catch a public bus from Cairns Airport?
No. The 50 cent Translink network does not reach the terminals, so you need a taxi, rideshare or pre-booked transfer for the airport leg. The buses are handy once you are in town.
