Is There a Hotel at Cairns Airport? Not Yet, But One Is Being Built

SkyHaven’s first 98 rooms are under construction at Cairns Airport, 18 to 24 months out. Who it is actually for, and what to do until then.

“Is there a hotel at Cairns Airport?” is one of those questions that gets asked constantly and has, until now, had a boring answer. No. There is not.

That is changing, though not as fast as the headlines suggest, and not in the way most travellers are hoping.

What is actually happening

SkyHaven is a short stay accommodation project in the Cairns Airport Business Park, developed by Cairns builder MiHaven, with Mandala Hotels and Resorts as operator. Mandala also runs the Mercure Cairns.

The full project is 186 units across two three storey buildings on a 7,560 square metre site near the domestic terminal, a mix of one and two bedroom self contained apartments with kitchenettes. Planned shared facilities include pools, a gymnasium, a cafe and meeting and conference space.

Stage one, 98 rooms, is under construction, with completion reported as 18 to 24 months away. Stage two, a further 88 rooms, is slated to start around mid 2027. So the realistic answer to “can I stay at the airport” is still no, and will be for a while yet.

Be clear about who it is for

This is the part worth being straight about, because “hotel at the airport” conjures something it is not.

SkyHaven is aimed at corporate travellers, fly in fly out workers, aviation staff and regional contractors. Self contained apartments with kitchenettes in a business park is accommodation built for people working, not for a family breaking up a holiday. It may well take leisure bookings when it opens. It is not being designed around them.

What to do in the meantime

If you have a brutal early flight or a late arrival, the honest options are unchanged. Cairns is a small airport and the city is close, roughly ten minutes to the CBD, so an airport hotel matters less here than it does in a bigger capital. Staying in town and taxiing out early is genuinely fine.

Our guide to getting to and from Cairns Airport covers the transfer options, and where to stay in Cairns covers the areas, including which ones make an early flight least painful.

We will revisit this closer to opening, when there is something you can actually book.
